Organic Style in a Kitchen that Invites the Outdoors In

The Back Story: This remodel took a tightly spaced kitchen with low ceilings and the footprint of a typical 1960’s ranch style house and opened it up to join effortlessly with the gorgeous lake views from the back of the home.

Our clients purchased this home in a small lake community with the idea of making it both their comfortable and functional place to work-from-home as well as to be their future retirement home. They wanted a kitchen with an open floor plan to take advantage of the lake view from the back of the house. The walls enclosing the kitchen and obstructing the view to the lake were removed. The ceilings were opened to the rafters and rustic beams, hand finished by the homeowner, were added. To compliment the new view, a relaxed and soothing natural color palette brings the outdoors in.

The house needed new ceiling joists all around which necessitated the lowering of the sink wall in the kitchen. To avoid losing vertical space, and to accommodate the new ceiling pitch, we had the cabinets custom-built with angled tops and the trim was scribed to the unique angle of the ceiling. A built-in paper towel dispenser was also designed to keep this handy item at arms-reach and out of the way of countertop activities.

On center stage is a large island in vertical grain quartersawn oak with a weathered natural flat stain. A bar with open shelving was added and the wall clad in white limestone contributing an attractive natural and textural effect. To add a touch of contrast, drama and sophistication, the countertops and backsplashes were done in Macchia Vecchia Porcelain slabs.

All the amenities, including a 48” range in white with brass detailing, paneled French door refrigerator and custom-built plaster hood were carefully designed and curated for function and to blend with the relaxing lakeside ambience.

In keeping with the lakeside theme, Natural Boat Cleats in unlacquered brass were used for refrigerator pulls.

Painted in Chantilly Lace, the Ulrich custom framed square inset perimeter cabinetry provides a clean canvas on which we built layers of warm woods and nature-inspired textures. Aged brass finishes on classically styled bin pulls and knobs and inset cabinet doors compliment the Boat Cleats to support the lakeside feel.
